Just came across this old picture

This would have been taken at 58 Sadler in St. Vital around 1953. That's Marilyn on the left, brother Jeff center, and me on the right. I don't look too happy!

Last Market Day For This Year

So here we were, Marilyn and I, at the last day of the farmers' market for this year. It was hot today! Probably the hottest market day we've experienced this summer! We had a pot luck afterwards, yummy yummy! It was great!

We are going to try and find out the name of this annual. It starts of green but the leaves gradually change to pinks and mauves and it's gorgeous! One of the plantings in the lovely flower beds on the grounds at Pine Ridge Hollow, across the way from where we have the farmers market.

Some lovely fall color in this bed.......they have changed over their setting for the outdoor weddings held here to this spot for now. Earlier they were in another area where there were midseason flowers in full bloom.

A wedding was going to happen in the afternoon.......note the rosepetals sprinkled along the aisle.

Last of the Golfing

Well, there we are, the three musketeers! Our fourth, daughter Sherri, hasn't made too many games this year but hopefully will get her priorities straight next golf season...LOL!! There is Maggie on the left, Kris (daughter #2) at center, and moi, Lucy, on the right. Taken on the tee box of number 7 hole at Larters at St. Andrews Golf Course.

It's all in the follow-through my dear! (So says Katherine Hepburn anyway!) A favorite of ours to say at times throughout the golf season. We had so much fun!

I look like a midget and I had a really lousy tee shot on this hole, a very long par 5 of course! Sh-t.......is another favorite saying throughout the season!

And therrrrrrrrre's Maggie!! She can hit a mile! ...and check her follow-through!

Here's a slideshow for you. We had a great evening, were treated to a lovely buffet dinner after the game and of course as usual, they drew for some great prizes. We'll hope the weather keeps up and maybe we can get together for a game next week, eh girls?

Good Morning!

Apple Pie Sunday

Do you think it was this little note that inspired my husband to peel and chop apples for pie last night while I was enjoying a steak dinner at a nice little restaurant with friends?

Who knows when Kiera wrote this little note on a scrap of paper? Anyway, it showed up the other day and caught my husband's eye. It must have caught his eye again and since he's been out in the yard picking up the apples that are constantly falling or getting blown off the tree and piling them up in the kitchen, he must have decided that if he peels and chops them maybe they'll get into a piecrust!

So this morning, out came the frozen piecrust that tastes just like homemade......Tenderflake.... and here's the apple pie! Now all we need is Kiera! Will she be home in time for dinner from her camping over at Birds Hill Park?
She spent some time with Marilyn and I at the market yesterday......such a little salesperson she is, and giving us advise on display and pricing! It was fun, and we had a spot near the buskers so enjoyed the entertainment from them too. Forgot my camera though, and there were these three young boys singing and playing instruments plus some gals that were singing my kinda songs........ gotta run now!

I've been meaning to tell you

Mike and Sherri now own this cute little vintage trailer. Easy enough for Sherri to haul, and she has driven it over to Birds Hill Park campgrounds and she and Kiera had a couple of days there last week. As I speak (Friday evening) they are setting up camp there again for the weekend.

It's very cute and has everything one would need . They just got it last week of August so they didn't have much time to use it but next year they plan on seeing a few different campgrounds in Manitoba. Kiera just loves camping, even as close by as Birds Hill Provincial Park. There's lots to see there and lots of hiking and swimming and fun stuff to do.
Pine Ridge Hollow borders on the park and is not far from the campground area. Kiera and Sherri are taking bikes with them this weekend and will ride over to visit Marilyn and I at the Farmers' Market!
Not to be left out, daddy Mike in the background and up front.....Jaxon.....my grand-dog! He loves camping! He loves coming to the market too, he gets lots of petting and free samples from the vendor that sells doggie treats!
He's such a sweetie!

Did you say it's Friday?

I am really behind in my blogging! This has been a short week with having a holiday Monday, and then the trip to Grand Forks and all.

We've also had gorgeous summer weather, now that it's September? Go figure! That means lingering longer outside in the yard, more garden produce to deal with, and just plain enjoying what we missed all summer. I hope it lasts.

I think I did the last of my pickling today. The dang cucumbers are still giving me lovely little cukes to pickle, but I had to really scrounge for jars doing the last batch today. I had already picked up a dozen quarts at the thrift shop last week when I started running short.

I was scrounging in the garage on the shelves and found a few pint jars I'd bought at a garage sale at some point. Look at this one. It's full of sweet crunchy yum yum type pickles now but the blue is so pretty I had to take a picture. It's an oldie and this particular jar of pickles will go to Leslie, from The Red Barn. She's crazy about these pickles and I always give her some in the fall.

Our second last market day tomorrow. Wow, the summer has flown by and I never in my life figured I'd be selling pendants and vintage linens along with Marilyn at a farmers' market almost every Saturday morning all summer long! It's a good thing I had a pretty good inventory of pendants when I started because I sure haven't had the time to make many more. Showers are forecast but we'll see what happens in the morning. ttfn

Last minute trip

Sherri, Kiera and I are off on a little jaunt. We're leaving the country actually! Going over the border to Grand Forks, ND just for the day. Should be fun! Kiera goes back to school Wednesday so we're leaving early in the a.m. and will get back by around 6:00 so she can settle down and get a good night's sleep. We're enjoying a heat wave with rain forecast for tomorrow then hot and sunny again. What a treat!

Feels like summer Saturday

What a great day! Chilly and cloudy enough in the morning to make us think the weatherman lied, but it ended up being sunny and hot, although quite windy. The day started at the farmers market, then on the way home I went to visit my mom at the nursing home.I put a few pics on a slide show from my day. Click on it!

Here's what I did when I got home!

Cold Water Wash Delicate Cycle DO NOT BLEACH

Yes, I cheat!! Not all the time, but once I'm pickling every second or third day, I tire of standing at the sink, scrubbing each little cucumber for my pickles.

So.......I throw some towels in the washer, fill it with cold water, put the cukes in, give them a little gentle agitation, leave them soak for a while then go back and agitate a bit more, fish them out of the water, rinse them off in the sink, and I'm good to go!! Then of course I drain, rinse, then wash the towels, which will clean up your washer.

You'll notice the last picture shows them with the ends trimmed off. I read somewhere that you should trim the blossom end as it may retain some little spores of something or other that can spoil your pickles.......so I just trim both ends while I'm at it.

Anyway, I got another 9 quarts of dills done before supper. It's September! I should be finished doing all this pickling by now. The cucumbers are just peaking now!

It's a beautiful day again today, Sunday. I have lots to do, including unloading my car from market days yesterday! I hope to get some Ebay listings done, then out to pick the cucumbers and other veggies again. I'm almost at my limit for the pickling, thank goodness.

Could be that Kiera will be here for an overnight visit so will get as much done as I can before she comes over this afternoon. She keeps me very busy once she's here. Have a lovely day!

Summer is here?

Finally!! Can you believe it? This is the best forecast we've had since last summer! It's September and it's like July! What a bonus after 6 months of below normal temperatures! Love it! I will actually be turning on the air conditioning today! Farmers market tomorrow, yippee! The vegetable vendors will be happy.......they don't have to be picking in the mud or rain!

Flashback! Jelly Roll! Mom's recipes

My sister, Marilyn, emailed me last night. My brother Jeff, who lives in British Columbia, wanted to know if we had mom's cook books and could find the recipe for jelly roll. I haven't had homemade jelly roll since mom used to make it! I remember she made it fairly often and I can see her now, rolling it up in a damp towel!

I have my mom's cookbooks. When we cleaned out her apartment (she's in a nursing home now), I ended up with them. I've looked through them for fun many times, and now and then for a special recipe. Of course the best one is the smaller size 3 ring binder that she covered in 60's mactac and glued in a zillion recipes that she had clipped from newspapers and the handwritten ones she had gathered over the years.

The ones in the above picture are all handwritten by her, except for the Lemon Butter. Definitely not her handwriting, and looks pretty old. As is the jelly roll recipe! The paper is starting to disintegrate!

Click to enlarge the first picture above and you'll see bits of some of the recipes like "Pate Christmas 1974". We called it "potty", lol, always did! On that page are several "potty" recipes, the basic ingredients but changed up a bit. My mom and dad were trying to duplicate from my dad's memory, the taste of this spicy meat pie that they used to have each year at Christmas, usually after midnight mass, when he was growing up on the farm. You'll also see a recipe for butter tarts which has written below it and crossed out: "I owe Vera 2 bus tickets".....Vera is her sister.

Mom never made anything without a recipe! Unlike me......unless it's baking (which I seldom do!)

I'm going to have to make a jelly roll once fall sets in and there is more time! (How can you tell, I'm not a baker?)Meanwhile I'll give you the recipe here, if you want to try it. It's delicious!

Mom's Jelly Roll

Beat 5 eggs and add 1 cup sugar, 1tsp. vanilla.

Then add: 1 cup flour, 1 tsp. baking powder.

Bake 10 - 12 minutes in 375 degree F oven.

Proceed as for jelly roll. Ha ha ha, only kidding, but there are a few people reading this that will find that line funny....... private joke!

OK.............well, the written recipe becomes vague. It says:

When cooked roll in a damp towel, spread with jelly & roll........which won't make alot of sense to you, so I've googled and found a recipe with decent directions and am just going to paste it here for you.......just the directions. You can use jam or jelly or whatever you like when you make it. Also, I'm sure she was just using a regular cookie sheet that had sides to it, maybe not 1" but close. Also wondering if she just didn't heavily grease the pan with margarine??

Heat oven to 375°. Line jelly roll pan, 15 1/2 × 101/2 × 1 inch, with cooking parchment paper, aluminum foil or waxed paper; generously grease foil or waxed paper. Beat eggs in small bowl with electric mixer on high speed about 5 minutes or until very thick and lemon colored. Pour eggs into medium bowl. Gradually beat in granulated sugar vanilla on low speed. Gradually add flour and baking powder, beating just until batter is smooth. Pour into pan, spreading to corners.
Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Immediately loosen cake from edges of pan and turn upside down onto towel generously sprinkled with powdered sugar. Carefully remove paper. Trim off stiff edges of cake if necessary. While hot, carefully roll cake and towel from narrow end. Cool on wire rack at least 30 minutes.
Unroll cake and remove towel. Beat jelly slightly with fork to soften; spread over cake. Roll up cake. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

My feet are sore!

Things have been hectic since last week. The garage sale, then on Sunday I had the kids and grandkids for a weeny and corn roast, complete with fireworks! I had neglected the garden so it's been catch-up time!
The laundry and ironing is next....oh what an exciting life I have!

Today I was pickling all day and evening and my feet hurt! Took a break this afternoon for a quick trip to visit mom.
They were having a little gathering for residents of the month! Got to enjoy a nice visit with mom and a few of the other residents at the same table, and a lovely cuppa coffee and some delicious cake!

I bought a new camera!! Last week I went to look at one on sale and ended up with something else......... a deal I couldn't turn down. I had planned on using my garage sale money to get a badly needed new camera and wanted something that took good closeups as well as having a nice long zoom.......mine is 12x.

Just a couple of point and shoot pictures of flowers taken at Mona's. CLICK TO ENLARGE, the detail is pretty darn good and the camera was not expensive.
Can't wait to play with it!
